Georgina Tupper Awarded Jubilee Medal

Manotick, ON —Last weekend, the Rideau Township Historical Society (RTHS) and Dickenson House Museum celebrated the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in Manotick. As part of the celebrations, Pierre Poilievre, MP for Nepean-Carleton, presented Georgina Tupper with a Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal in recognition of her commitment to preserving local history and contributing to her community.
“The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal is a tangible and lasting way for us to pay tribute to Canadians whose achievements have benefited their fellow citizens, their community and their country,” said Poilievre. “Today I wish to recognize Mrs. Georgina Tupper, who has demonstrated her commitment to this community by founding the Rideau Township Historical Society and the Rideau Archives. Her work in this field has ensured that the history of the Rideau will be around for generations to come.”
“As a founding member of the Rideau Historical Society, I am honoured to be recognized for the role I played,” said Tupper. “The Community was anxious to have a forum to research and share its rich history and the Society was a wonderful fit.”
The RTHS was established in September 1974 with the goal to increase interest in the history of the area as well as, “to collect, classify, edit, and preserve, information relating to this Township.” Since this time, the RTHS has taken up numerous projects to meet these goals, including the ongoing “Barns Appreciation Project” which seeks to photograph all the historical barns in the Rideau Township before they disappear.
In addition to her contributions to preserving history, Tupper is also responsible for organizing community events like the Kars Fair and the annual International Plowing Match.
