OTTAWA – June 23rd marked the 26th anniversary of the terrorist attack on Air India Flight 182, which claimed the lives of 329 persons.

In a demonstration of ongoing moral commitment to fighting terrorism and ensuring this tragedy is not forgotten, Prime Minister Stephen Harper unveiled a memorial in Montreal similar to others in Ottawa, Toronto and Vancouver.

These memorials are places of quiet contemplation.  They serve as reminders of Canada’s painful loss and of the need to remain vigilant against future threats.

Pierre Poilievre, Member of Parliament for Nepean-Carleton, stood at the memorial in Ottawa and said “Today we remember not only the victims of Flight 182, but those who died in New York on 9/11, those who lost their lives at the hands of insurgents in Afghanistan, and all people affected by terrorism.  Our government believes in principles and values such as freedom, democracy, human rights, the rule of law and an uncompromising opposition to terrorism.  These are the values that our government has consistently supported.”
