OTTAWA, ON – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau must publicly condemn the threats against town hall attendee Kathy Katula, Member of Parliament Pierre Poilievre said.
On January 13, Mrs. Katula, a disabled grandmother who works up to 15 hours a day as a personal support worker to pay her $1000 per month hydro bill, attended a meeting in Peterborough and broke down in tears explaining her agony to the Prime Minister.
“How do you justify to a mother of four children, three grandchildren, physical disabilities and working up to 15 hours a day; how is it justified for you to ask me to pay a carbon tax when I only have $65 left of my paycheque every two weeks to feed my family?”
“I feel like you’ve failed me,” Katula said.
Prime Minister Trudeau danced around Mrs. Katula’s question, and now she’s facing threats. Hundreds of people have called Mrs. Katula a liar, and threatened to show up at her house to read her meter.
“No one in a democracy should fear for their safety for speaking their mind to the Prime Minister – especially when the Prime Minister himself asked for Canadians’ feedback,” said Poilievre.
“Mrs. Katula’s story is the story of millions of Ontarians,” Poilievre said. “Green energy insiders got rich off sweetheart ‘green energy’ contracts on the backs of people like Mrs. Katula. Ontarians are already struggling to pay their bills, and then Prime Minister Trudeau comes along and introduces a $1028 per person carbon tax. When is it enough?”
“The Prime Minister must clearly and unequivocally condemn these threats against Mrs. Katula. He should do so at tonight’s town hall in Sherbrooke,” Poilievre concluded.
