Strandherd-Armstrong Bridge opens, significantly improving connectivity for Riverside South and Barrhaven residents
Ottawa – Today, the Harper Government, the Province of Ontario and the City of Ottawa celebrated the opening ofthe new Strandherd-Armstrong Bridge. This new bridge, which spans the Rideau River between River Road and Prince of Wales Drive, provides new transit, traffic, cycling and pedestrian connections between the Riverside South and Barrhaven communities.
This 143 metre long bridge carries four general purpose lanes, two auxiliary turning lanes, two dedicated transit lanes, two on-road cycling lanes and sidewalks in each direction. The dedicated transit lanes will provide efficient OC Transpo services as an alternative to the private automobile while on-road cycling lanes and sidewalks will promote active transportation measures.
The bridge will also contribute to public safety by enhancing emergency response capabilities to both Riverside South and Barrhaven communities.
“The Strandherd-Armstrong Bridge has been my top priority for constituents in Barrhaven, Manotick, and Riverside South,” said the Honourable Pierre Poilievre, P.C., M.P. Nepean-Carleton. “That is why I helped obtain one-third of the funding needed from the federal government. I am very pleased to celebrate the completion of this long awaited and much needed infrastructure project for the tens of thousands of residents who will benefit from it. Through this project, and others like it, the Harper Government is creating new jobs and stimulating the local economy.”
John Fraser, MPP for Ottawa South, noted that, “Infrastructure is not about bricks and mortar. It’s about people. We remain committed to improving quality of life and creating new opportunities for prosperity through sustainable long-term investments in infrastructure.”
“This new bridge will help reduce commute times, facilitate new transit connections and provide a beautiful new piece of architecture for the nation’s capital,” said Mayor Jim Watson. “This is another great example of what can be accomplished when the federal, provincial and municipal governments work together to deliver transportation infrastructure.”
The total cost of the Strandherd-Armstrong Bridge Project was $50 million. The Federal and Provincial governments are each funding a third of the project’s eligible costs, to a maximum of $16 million each, under the Building Canada Fund. The City of Ottawa is contributing the remaining funding.

Ouverture du pont Strandherd-Armstrong facilitant considérablement les déplacements pour les résidents de Riverside-Sud et de Barrhaven
Ottawa – Aujourd’hui, les gouvernements Harper et de l’Ontario ainsi que l’administration de la Ville d’Ottawa ont célébré l’inauguration du nouveau pont Strandherd-Armstrong. Ce nouveau pont, qui enjambe la rivière Rideau entre le chemin River et la promenade Prince of Wales, procure une nouvelle liaison pour le transport en commun et la circulation automobile, cycliste et piétonnière entre les communautés de Riverside-Sud et Barrhaven.
Le pont de 143 mètres de long compte quatre voies de circulation ordinaires, deux voies auxiliaires de virage, deux voies réservées aux autobus, deux autres voies pour les cyclistes et, dans chaque direction, un trottoir en bordure. Les voies réservées aux autobus assureront un transport en commun efficace pour ceux qui le préféreront à l’automobile, et il y aura les voies cyclables et les trottoirs pour le transport actif.
En outre, le pont améliorera la sécurité publique en facilitant les interventions d’urgence dans les secteurs de Riverside-Sud et de Barrhaven.
« Le pont Strandherd-Armstrong Bridge a été ma priorité pour les contribuables de Barrhaven, Manotick et Riverside-Sud, a déclaré Pierre Poilievre, C.P., député de Nepean-Carleton. C’est pour cette raison que j’ai aidé à obtenir le tiers du financement nécessaire du gouvernement fédéral. Je suis ravi de célébrer l’achèvement de ce projet d’infrastructure attendu vraiment essentiel pour les dizaines de milliers de résidents qui vont en profiter. Dans le cadre de ce projet et d’autres du même acabit, le gouvernement Harper crée de nouveaux emplois et stimule l’économie locale. »
M. John Fraser, député provincial d’Ottawa-Sud a souligné que « l’infrastructure, ce n’est pas seulement la construction et les matériaux. L’infrastructure sert d’abord aux gens. Nous nous sommes engagés à améliorer la qualité de vie des citoyens et à créer de nouvelles occasions propices à la prospérité au moyen d’investissements durables et à long terme dans l’infrastructure. »
« Ce nouveau pont va aider à réduire les délais de navettage, faciliter les déplacements en transport en commun; de plus, il constitue un ajout architectural magnifique pour la capitale nationale, a commenté le maire Jim Watson. Ce pont est un autre exemple de ce qui peut être accompli lorsque les gouvernements fédéral et provincial et l’administration municipale travaillent en collaboration pour exécuter des travaux d’infrastructure de transport. »
Le coût total du projet du pont Strandherd-Armstrong est 50 millions de dollars. Les gouvernements fédéral et provincial ont tous deux contribué au tiers du financement du projet, pour un maximum de 16 millions de dollars chacun, en vertu du Fonds Chantiers Canada. La Ville d’Ottawa assumera le reste du financement.
